Will County 4-H Members display projects at Will County 4-H Summer Show

Will County 4-H members displayed their projects at the Will County 4-H Summer Show at Francis Field in New Lenox on July 17, 2010.  Project topics ranged from Forestry to Vegetable Market Production to Small Engines to Entomology.

Will County 4-H is an educational program of the University of Illinois Extension.  4-H members receive educational booklets regarding their project and then produce a product or an informational poster to display at the 4-H Summer Show.  For example, a 4-Her doing a food preservation project would receive a booklet from the 4-H office, learn how to preserve food, preserve salsa or other type of canned-food, and then display his or her finished product--along with information on the steps he or she took to arrive at the finished project--at the summer show.  Here are some food preservation projects from the Will County 4-H Summer Show:

Like many state programs, Will County 4-H has had its state funding reduced, according to David McMurty, Extension Youth Development Educator. McMurty's position is currently part-time. In the past, the county's Youth Development Educator was a full-time position. McMurty stated Will County 4-H has an incredible volunteer base. Volunteers help with all Will County 4-H events, serving as project judges and helping with set-up, take-down, logistics, planning, and all work related to helping organize the 4-H show for Will County youth. Volunteers lead local 4-H clubs, helping youth sign-up fro projects and ensuring all youth receive their project booklets.

Along with the annual summer show, Will County 4-H also organizes a Visual Arts Show in the spring, where 4-H members display photography and other visual arts projects. Large animal projects are exhibited at the Will County Fair in Peotone, Illinois.
